É fácil fingir não saber do que se trata, mas é lógico que eu saquei que você reconheceu o ponto em comum entre as capas aí em cima, nem vem. Os quatro discos acima são alguns dos primeiros passos dados pelo blog Mashup Preservation Society, que começou a funcionar no mês passado. Eles se apresentam assim:

Hello friends. We are a collective of artists, DJs, producers, sound engineers, musicians and music collectors. The mission of the Mashup Preservation Society is to casually document, record and protect the music of the audio "mashup" style. In general, a mashup is a post-turntablist method of combining elements of two or more songs together to form a new creative. In traditional formats, this includes combining an acapella or vocal track from one song and placing it over an instrumental or dub of another. However, this style can quickly become very complex and lead to creative expression and interpretation regarding editing, mixing and production. In many cases, the result can be a completely new piece of art that would never have existed before otherwise. In others, the result may be as simple as a parody or witty cut-up.

Our stance regarding the legality of mashups is simple: We are documenting a significant and influencial segment of music and artistic history that can not be otherwise preserved by the artists themselves for legal reasons. For educational and historical purposes of preserving the music, we believe this concept is legal under Fair Use. This site, however, is not an excuse to distribute any mashups or remix material under Fair Use. Instead, we select material important to musical history that has influenced and will influence artists and producers for years to follow.

Much of this music is not otherwise documented. Some has been released on "white label" vinyl, some released in disposable formats of CDR or MP3 only mediums. As a result, without this act of preservation, it is music and human history that would otherwise be lost.

Em outras palavras: mashup não é crime. Essa é a grande luta deste começo de século. A resistência da propriedade intelectual e as possibilidades de fusão e justaposição sem a perda de identidade. Isso tudo com música enquanto metáfora (ou, como eu prefiro dizer, boi de piranha).

Lembre-se: mashup não é crime.

* PS: E se você ainda tá se fazendo de besta, as capas lá em cima são do Gray Album (disco em que o Dangermouse mashupou o Black Album do Jay-Z com o Álbum Branco dos Beatles e que foi seu passaporte para o estrelato - pense bem, sem Gray Album, sem "Crazy"), o American Edit (em que o americano Party Ben e o australiano Team9 se fingiram de Dean Gray - anagrama pra Green Day - pra mashupar o American Idiot com um monte de outras coisas, provocando pelo menos um hit, "Bouleverd of Broken Songs"), o London Booted (com vários mashupeiros - e que faz lembrar que o mashup também é subgênero do glitch e do reggae eletrônico) e o Beastles (em que o DJ BC colide os b-boys judeus de Nova York com os quatro fodões de Liverpool).
